I know what you mean by plastic look. It's my belief through struggle that pressure sensitive brushes used everywhere makes blurry edges through layering paint too much. Maybe try non pressure sensitive brushes or the lasso tool?
Now did you make the background in the left look out of focus? I've wanted to do that..but don't know a good way.

These are still solid. I make plastic junk all the time. I'm an icon slutt.
